ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the use of digital badges in an urban TK-12 school district in southern California. The Corona-Norco Unified School District’s (CNUSD) college and career readiness initiative, Passport to Success (P2S), has been in place for the past two years. In that time, over 413,000 badges have been earned by TK-12 grade students at 49 school sites. The social nature of digital badges using Mozilla’s Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI) allows students over the age of 13 to share accomplishments through social media, thus rewarding students through their peer networks and simultaneously motivating their peers to explore and achieve badges.
