ABSTRACT

In 2014, a team from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, designed and ran the Carpe Diem Massive Open Online Course (CD MOOC) that deployed digital badges to encourage participants’ mastery of key elements of the Carpe Diem learning design process. Other aims in regards to badges included reward, recognition, and motivation of the CD MOOC participants. In this case study, we discuss the design, development, and implementation of badges, and the opportunities and challenges faced in this process. Participants’ perception of badges is also discussed.
