ABSTRACT

History is full of people who have worked to achieve justice. Some have brought about advances in justice purely through the power of their personalities. Others have worked tirelessly in their local communities. Some have taken issues of injustice to court. Still others have used their positions of power to advance justice. All four types are to be applauded, but in the larger scheme of things, each type has its own limitations. The charismatic reformer may have difficulty duplicating her success elsewhere, and when she is gone, a similarly charismatic leader may be impossible to find. Those who work tirelessly to change their local communities are to be admired for their efforts, but their work is often unnoticed outside of the communities in which they work. Victories in court can be hard to win as well, and most people do not occupy positions of power from which justice might be advanced. In fact, it is often those in power who stand to gain from injustice.
