ABSTRACT

Working with an initial grant from the Ruth Mott Foundation’s “Share Art Flint” Program, the staff and board of the Buckham Fine Arts Project partnered with the Foundation and GVRC staff to create an arts workshop program that would give detained youth the opportunity to work one-on-one with established artists in the Flint community. As the average length of confinement within GVRC is approximately three weeks, organizers determined that twice-weekly sessions for a period of four weeks would allow participation by a large number of residents, while at the same time giving the youth a concentrated period of time within which to develop a relationship of trust with the artists.
