ABSTRACT

This chapter explains in detail the steps one can use to plan their write-up; the companion website has a shorter, cheat-sheet version of much of the same information, one that stresses the narrative quality of a research report. It focuses on a particular academic genre: the research paper. People review the main parts of a research paper and raise awareness of some of the characteristics of these different parts. A research paper is a piece of writing that is based on original research. It is clearly structured with section headings, similar to an experimental or data-based research article. It consists of introduction, literature review, methods, results, discussion, conclusion and reference list. It's a good idea to revise and edit one's paper throughout the writing process and then again once they have a full draft of the paper ready. Revising one's paper means rethinking their argumentation and content and conducting major rewrites of the paper.
