ABSTRACT

As we become accustomed to writing and reading in a more mediated and technologised environment, it is increasingly difficult to think of words in isolation from sound and image. E-books, the Internet and a plethora of networked and computerised systems spell the passing of the literary as purely page-based and uncontaminated by the other arts. Yet while the reciprocity between words and images in contemporary artworks has received considerable critical scrutiny, the dialogue between words and sounds in such works is less often the object of attention. The relationship between words and music in this contemporary context is the focus of this book.
