ABSTRACT

This chapter continues the discussion of urbanism and urban ecology by focusing on the theoretical perspective of urban political economy, also known as the new urban sociology. Th is perspective will be discussed within the context of how space is socially constructed in the city. Aiding this discussion is an examination of the contributions of some infl uential urban geographers. Urban geography is an allied discipline of urban sociology. It takes as its starting point the spatial distribution of cities and its built environment. From this perspective it studies the way cities are constructed, governed, and experienced.
