ABSTRACT
When in 2005 UNESCO called upon heritage managers and professionals to take up the cause of fighting climate change, this did not initially meet with universal approval. Within UNESCO, there was concern that this new mission would result in a turf battle between those working in the scientific versus the cultural branches of the organization. Outside UNESCO, some heritage professionals worried that it would divert crucial resources from the core mission of heritage conservation. As one highly placed heritage administrator asked, “What are we going to do, chase every new fad that comes along?”1
