ABSTRACT

The Cape Floral Region (CFR) covers 90 000 km2 of the southwestern portions of South Africa. Most of this vast region is covered by fynbos,1 while the remaining portions are covered by renosterveld,1 forest, succulent karoo2 and thicket. The region holds over 9 000 plant species and, as such, is considered one of the world’s most diverse areas. The region coincides with the Cape Floral Kingdom (Takhtajan 1986). This latter classification system divided the world into six kingdoms based on the number of endemic plant families, genera and species; it recognised the Cape as the smallest and one of the richest areas on the planet (Maree and Vromans 2010).
