ABSTRACT
The idea that our intelligence can be regarded as an “onboard computer” (see Introduction) is gaining currency. By this analogy it may, therefore, be seen as just another organ but one possessing novel and broad adaptive significance. In essence it is then no more than another multi-purpose limb; one that may develop into forms of external intelligence.
