ABSTRACT

The recognition and fear of the supernatural are so ingrained in human nature that one would expect this to be recorded as an onomastic feature. This was noted by T. Gwynn Jones in Welsh Folklore and Folk-Custom (London, 1930), p. 32, where he mentions the evidence for Lleyn and Eifionydd in Caernarvonshire. It is not always easy to define precisely the various terms used for ghosts and apparitions as will be seen from the definitions quoted below. P. L. Henry has attempted to show the semantic pattern of words for ‘hobgoblin’, etc., in an article in Etudes Celtiques VIII (1959), 404–16.
