ABSTRACT

Father de Foucauld has said that, among the Tuaregs, "everyone fashions [rhythmic recitations] ... The usual subjects of the [rhythmic compositions] of the Kel Ahaggar, the Kel Azdjer and the Taitoq are the same: love, war, camels and travels, epigrams, [in sum, the whole range of their knowledge]. Often, martial [historical compositions] and epigrams give rise to answers; or a [rhythmist] belonging to the enemy party, or the person attacked replies by means of [a recitation]; a [rhythmic] duel is sometimes engaged in, [rhythmic compositions,] attacks and replies follow each other thick and fast" (DE FOUCAULD, quoted by R. BAZIN: 364-365).
