ABSTRACT

Narrative and storytelling are qualitative approaches that seek to examine the depth of people’s experiences through allowing them to tell their own stories in their own words. The approach also considers people’s stories in the context of the broader narrative of contextual factors that surround the story and its actors. There are many ways of encouraging research participants to tell their stories – this chapter considers appreciative inquiry, critical incident technique and question laddering. The chapter contains examples to help explain and demonstrate how to gather and analyse the data gathered using narrative and storytelling techniques.
