ABSTRACT

Although clearly related in form and content to the melody of Nos. 90/91, this version of it eschews their straightforward melodic reiteration of the B phrase in favor of several slightly varied repetitions in the sequence AB1AB2B. The A phrase, on the other hand, demonstrates little melodic variation in this version but is instead liable to small changes of rhythm and phrasing so that it is never sung the same way twice in any one stanza. Both the A and B2 phrases of No. 93 are remarkable in that they rely less on stepwise melodic movement than their counterparts do in Nos. 90-92. In particular, the B2 phrase contains the only instance of a melodic interval as great as a fifth among these four versions.
