ABSTRACT

There is, of course, latent ambiguity in the word highest {highest price lvalue I cost, cf. “sell to the highest bidder,” “prices are sky-high,” etc.). It is also of course the case in the history of British coinage that the penny has been minted in a number of different sizes, some larger than others, and of different weights (cf. pennyweight which takes no account of such differences). Hence there is potential for misunderstanding on the part of the naive in both cases.
