ABSTRACT

International Parallels: The AT index shows that this tale is known across Europe from Ireland, Scandinavia, Flanders, and Spain eastward to Finland, Hungary, and Russia. The only published English-language version we have found is the one by Randolph. It may be that the ribald nature of the tale has restrained narrators from relating it to folktale collectors whom they do not know very well, or that Victorian scruples on the part of the collectors themselves have led them to omit the story from their publications.
