ABSTRACT

Two French Canadians were digging a ditch and a Newfoundlander was foreman over them. One of the workers said to the other, "How come dat dere Newfie he's foreman over us?” The other didn't know, so the first climbed out of the ditch and asked the foreman, “Hey, how come you Newfie stand up here while we Frenchmen work in de dirt in dat ditch dere?” The Newfie looked at him and said, "Bye, it’s all on account a stupidity.” The Frenchman looked at him puzzled and said, "How's dat?” "Look, I'll show you,” said the Newf, “I'll hold my hand in front of that tree there, and you hit it as hard as you can.” The Frenchman didn't understand, but picked up the shovel and swung at the hand. The Newfie pulled his hand out of the way, and the shovel hit the tree. "See,” said the Newf, "it's on account a stupidity.”
