ABSTRACT
Assessment is an essential element of language teaching generally and of listening development in particular for three reasons. First of all, assessment gives teachers appropriate starting and continuation points for planning instruction. Secondly, assessment provides an avenue of feedback on learner performance and assists learners in extending their learning expectations and goals. Thirdly, assessment forms part of overall curriculum evaluation, by suggesting areas where instruction needs to be developed or revised.
