ABSTRACT

Digital technology has long replaced conventional analog technology in many applications around the audio production studio. For instance, the CD player long ago replaced the turntable as a necessary piece of production equipment. However, even digital technology that has been considered a staple of audio production is being replaced. CD players have become a less important production tool lately as more audio files are recorded, edited, and played back on computers as separate files and not stored as often on one removable disk. Mobile and tablet computing, smartphones, and the Internet in general have allowed for more digital manipulation of files in regard to transferring between editors and storage. This chapter looks at some of the digital equipment that is commonly used in today’s audio production environment. Although this chapter is not intended to be a comprehensive survey, most of the equipment mentioned still plays a role in digital playback and recording in many audio production studios.
