ABSTRACT

Supervision can run into difficulties despite the best intentions of the supervisor or supervisee, however these problems can often be resolved easily. Occasionally, more significant difficulties arise which are more complex to address; commonly these concern one of four issues: competence, confidence, ethics and the supervisory relationship. In this special topic we explore a number of specific challenges that can arise in supervision and consider how they might be prevented or overcome. Through these examples, the reader is encouraged to consider the general ideas that can be drawn in order to develop an approach (as supervisor or supervisee) to recognise and address difficulties in supervision.
