ABSTRACT

The time between repetitions is called the periodic time and the motion occurring within one period is called a cycle (Figure 28.1) with the number of cycles per second termed the frequency. Since one cycle occurs in the periodic time T, the frequency is 1/T. The unit of frequency is the hertz (Hz), with 1 Hz equal to one cycle per second. The amplitude A of an oscillation is the maximum displacement from the initial rest position, the range of displacement being thus ±A.
