ABSTRACT

On the whole, psychoanalysts have proved more tolerant than psychiatrists of the idea that there is no clear dividing line between the neuroses and psychoses, and, because psychoanalysis has influenced American psychiatry so much more than psychiatry in Britain, it is in the United States that most of the research on borderline conditions has been done. Many have gone along with the psychoanalytic assertion that borderline disorders constitute a halfway stage in the disintegration of the personality in the course of its decline into schizophrenia.
