ABSTRACT

From European war to European Union It was a European war that led to the foundation of what is now the European Union. Of course, World War Two was far more than just a European war. But it was a confl ict that started in Europe and that aff ected virtually every European country in some form or other, and it was in Europe that some of the worst atrocities of the war occurred. In the aft ermath of the war, there was a determination to fi nd a way of preventing such a devastating confl ict from happening again. Th e political, economic and social mood in many European countries demanded change and innovation and fresh approaches to problems, both among political leaders and in terms of general public attitudes.
