ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on the theoretical and empirical insights based on the human development and capability approach. It provides both a resource and a challenge for all those people working in universities who wish courageously and imaginatively to co-create another kind of university and make it possible through their analysis, actions, human development values and their search for justice. The book considers the globalisation has prioritised instrumental knowledge and skills and the production of knowledge to increase economic opportunities for technology-driven economic sectors. It presents an example of participatory action research (PAR) as a way to illustrate the potential of this approach to contribute to a knowledge and critical-thinking project in universities, with multidimensional goals for all the academic community and in engagement with wider communities as a way to practice engaged scholarship and provide effective support for stakeholders in their processes of self-determining social change.
