ABSTRACT

The Oxford English Dictionary defines sport in the modern world as any activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. The feature of ancient sport which finds similar expression in modern competitive activity is the phenomenon of record-keeping namely, the compilation of statistical information relating to individual and team achievements in a variety of contested arenas. It should be clear to this point that there is a wealth of data concerning ancient Egyptian sports sports practiced by Egyptian kings, sports practiced by other Egyptians, the nature of competition in Egyptian sports, ball games, board games and children's play, acrobatics, and hunting. In the modern age, the Olympic Games are global gatherings featuring a variety of competitive summer and winter sports. In general, competitive activity in ancient Rome was in modern parlance a spectator sport.
