ABSTRACT

The previous two chapters discuss aspects of multidimensional poverty in China: Chapter 4 describes the current situation, and Chapter 5 shows the trends. To this point we have not included the important group of rural-to-urban migrants. Considering the growing number of such migrants, which is more than 260 million in 2013 according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS),1 this group has attracted the interest of both researchers and policy makers. Thus, in this chapter we explore the extent of multidimensional poverty of the migrant. This chapter is organized as follows. Section 6.1 reviews the dataset that is used in the computation of poverty; Section 6.2 shows the trends in multidimensional poverty; Section 6.3 discusses the urban-rural disparity; Section 6.4 compares the differences between migrants and rural residents; Section 6.5 presents the diversity among employed urban and migrant groups; and finally, Section 6.6 concludes this chapter and offers some policy suggestions.
