ABSTRACT

A balding wig can be worn over a latex, Glatzan, vinyl, silicone, or any other form of bald cap, or it can have silk or chamois built into the foundation to imitate the skin under the balding areas. Most balding wigs utilize a nape-band foundation. Just as foundations meant to have full heads of hair can be made with or without ribbon, so can balding wigs. The biggest reason for making a hairpiece or partial wig is to be able to make it the exact color and texture to match someone's own hair. A common custom-made hairpiece is the toupee. Toupees are partial wigs made to add hair to the crown and/or top of the head. The reason for adding hair may be to cover a balding or thinning area or to add length. Switch, pigtail, and ponytail are terms used interchangeably for any number of hairpieces that have small bases and long hair.
