ABSTRACT

Elsewhere we have demonstrated that various cognitive and behavioural models can explain some of the variance in the behaviour of health professionals (Marteau & Johnston, 1987). In this paper we will review evidence concerning the extent to which the Health Belief Model (HBM), a model of health-related behaviour (Becker et al., 1979), may be applied to the behaviour of health professionals by considering whether the health beliefs of the health professionals vary in accordance with the main parameters of the HBM.
