ABSTRACT

Framed by holistic conception of assessment, this chapter provides an overview of key principles of effective assessment that includes feedback and demonstrates how these principles can be applied effectively within school and higher education contexts. All assessment for learning models should include, as part of assessment design, opportunities for students to use feedback to improve their work. Sustainable assessment is about increasing role of the student in assessment practice and changing role of the teacher in order to facilitate student autonomy in the process. To support students in managing affect, cognitions and actions as key components of self-regulatory practice, many have argued over the importance of involving students in dialogue with teachers and peers. The chapter highlights the importance of formative assessment in supporting students' learning in the classroom, and particularly the role of feedback. It also highlights the value of active involvement of students in their learning, and the need for students to be able to self-assess themselves.
