ABSTRACT

While Spat still enjoys making and wearing costumes for fun at various events, such as Halloween and conventions, he has found that turning his hobby into a profession has definitely had an impact on how he experiences his craft. “I often avoid making complex or involved costumes for myself to wear at cons, for [several] reasons. I find that pro costumers are nitpicked more thoroughly than fans, so our costumes have to be [perfect]. So even if I’m trying to make something for fun to wear at a con, it often stops being fun and more has to be a showcase to show off an aspect of costuming that I know I can do [exceptionally well], especially if it’s a costume that other people have made before. Many times, I’ll just buy a costume, or wear a costume that’s made from found parts to make it easier … the [costumes] I make for myself are generally thrown together pretty quickly! And even at a con, I’ll wear a costume for 20 minutes and then I want to change!”
