ABSTRACT

Vienna, Austria, located in the heart of central Europe, is widely considered to be the heart and soul of the Western art music world. Included on the United Nations World Heritage list, it was the one-time home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss (both father and son), Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, and Anton Bruckner, as well as twentieth-century composers Arnold Schoenberg, Anton von Webern, and Alban Berg. Visitors can retrace the steps of these famous musicians, noting where they performed, conducted, composed, lived, and were buried. The city is also home to epic performing organizations such as the Vienna Boys’ Choir and the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as revered venues such as the State Opera House, the Burgtheater, and numerous churches that were the original performance sites for some of the world’s most highly regarded musical works.
