ABSTRACT
Music is often presented academically as a cerebral art. Textbooks often lean on verbal descriptions and analytical presentations of musical scores that focus on the creative process, rather than on musical performance. The telling of music history then becomes a tale of musical creators, or composers, rather than a story of performers. In reality, it was often the performers who were better known in their day.
