ABSTRACT
Although the notion of ‘the Columbian exchange’ seems to suggest that in the wake of Columbus’s ‘discovery’ momentous developments took place only on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, because of the interaction between Europe and the new world of the Americas, yet the continued and, indeed, increasing interaction with Asia produced important changes in the old Eurasian world as well.1
