ABSTRACT

The debate surrounding the extent and signicance of processes of globalisation continues. There is no clear consensus on this with actively competing views between the hyperglobalists and the sceptics. Even the transformationalists remain far from being a homogeneous group, with diering protagonists emphasising diering aspects of globalisation as being signicant. Regardless of one’s position within the globalisation debate, even arch sceptics, it is undeniable that the world is experiencing some signicant changes. For example, the national security agenda of the twenty-rst century is dierent to that of the eighteenth, nineteenth or twentieth centuries. Basic principles of sovereignty, citizenship and self-determination may be ongoing concepts but how each of these are understood and promoted has changed. Similarly, the issues covered in the above chapters have also undergone elements of transformation both in terms of the actual phenomena and their relative position on national and international agendas.
