ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the meaning and role of development in the world economy. The contested nature of the term is highlighted and the historical understandings are outlined in the rst section. The shift towards a neo-liberal orthodoxy in development is discussed and the impact of salient issues such as sustainability, foreign aid and the debt crisis is highlighted.
