ABSTRACT

The event that spurred these headlines in the Indian press, and equally agitated ones in the UK press, was an episode of the “Big Brother” reality show aired on UK’s Channel 4. What became known as “race row” in Britain, India and around the world, started with a series of negative comments directed towards Shilpa Shetty, a Bollywood star, by some of the contestants on the show’s “Celebrity” edition, which followed the lives and interactions of 14 housemates as they were confined

together and isolated from the rest of world for four weeks. Each week, at least one of the contestants, which included pop singer Jermaine Jackson (Michael’s brother), and various other actors, singers and models, was voted out of the house by the rest.
