ABSTRACT

This exquisitely delicate watercolor by Elizabeth Day (Figure 11.1 top) uses some of the strategies previously described in Chapter 9. The viewer enters the image from the left, through the gate, and winds around back to the house and the front door. Movement to the right is contained by the mass of dark trees. Rather than using the brightest values for the house itself, the artist applies them to the pilasters and fountain in the foreground. The next brightest area is reserved for the minor façade, and even though the main façade is also in sunlight, the sun ever so gently glances across its surface, indicated by the subtle shadows and cool light reflected off the bushes.
