ABSTRACT

In July 2011, at the 123rd International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Durban, South Africa, the Republic of Korea celebrated the announcement of PyeongChang’s successful bid to host the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. The Olympic Games are returning to Korea 30  years after 1988 Seoul Olympics, to a small town in the northeast of South Korea. This also marks the third time that the Winter Olympics have been held in Asia. Korea has successfully hosted many international sports games, such as the 1988 Seoul Olympics, 2002 FIFA World Cup, 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, the 17th Asian Games in Incheon 2014 and the 2015 Gwangju Universiade. Korea’s impressive economic advancement in recent years has drastically increased interest in sports. Taking into account Korea’s size and population numbers, its performance in international sport competitions has been outstanding.
