ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the complex relationship between ICT and society. Information and computer technology (ICT) has changed not only human

activity, as discussed in Chapter 6, but also society as a whole; and society has influenced what kinds of ICT have emerged. ICT has widespread impacts (e.g., contributing to climate change or changing society’s expectations). ICT has become an Umwelt, an environment, in which we live and work-as a forest is for trees, fungi and insects-an Umwelt that we ourselves generate.
