ABSTRACT
Section 4.1 looks at head words and their dependents within a phrase. Section 4.2 looks at the positioning of heads within their phrase, examining a major typological division into head-initial and head-fi nal languages. Section 4.3 examines the properties of head-marking and dependent-marking languages, another important typological distinction between languages.
