Helping Readers Make Sense of Print: Research that Supports a Whole Language Pedagogy

In our research, over several decades, we have attempted to understand reading as a receptive language process. Our research is based on the assumption that comprehension, the construction of meaning, is the essence of reading and that everything that happens in reading is directed toward comprehension (Flurkey & Xu, 2003; Wilde, 1996).
