ABSTRACT

Th is chapter focuses on theory and research related to how young children (of preschool age through third grade, approximately ages 4 to 8) make sense of, interpret and use visual information in picture storybooks. I also place particular emphasis on children’s responses in classroom situations, rather than family settings or other outof-school research. Th e chapter deals mainly with children’s talk, though there is some treatment of children’s drawing/painting in response to picturebooks. Almost all of the research studies cited in this chapter are qualitative, descriptive, and interpretive, occurring in naturalistic settings.
