ABSTRACT

During the drafting of this chapter, I attended a national literacy conference. I am amazed at the number of sessions dealing in some way with “new” media. I have raced from session to session trying to see as many as I could. As I hopped between sessions, I began to write down selected quotes from the presenters and their handouts:

“blogging extends classwork guiding principles” including promotion of the school motto “using students’ online literacy to encourage and extend literary discussion” “how fi lm can help students who are visual read literature” “using hip-hop to prepare students for the new SAT” “one out of four two-year-olds has a TV in his or her bedroom.”
