ABSTRACT

We have all become increasingly aware that students are learning through out-of-school experiences at a rate that may exceed in-class learning (see Preface to this volume), but we also know classrooms provide a critical space for most students’ literacy development. Classrooms are the major place of in-school learning, and, as such, need to be organized to create ongoing opportunities for practicing the visual, communicative, and performative arts in an integrated way.
