ABSTRACT
This quote illustrates how equality can be understood and what it means for societies. In this chapter the focus is mainly on economic inequality. Issues surrounding equality, or various degrees and types of inequality, have been at
the centre of debates in most welfare states and societies for centuries. This chapter will examine the way we understand equality and inequality and measure degrees thereof. How this relates to inclusion/exclusion will be considered in Chapter 10 .
