ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationships between the vocal styles, genres, and social contexts of Korean popular music. Regarding the vocal styles, I will consider a variety of technical elements of singing including timbre, dynamics, gamut, rhythm, phrasing, vocalization, ornamentation, diction, and any other means of distinctive vocal effects employed in a song to shape its performance outcome and its genre designation. These technical parameters will also include the visual aspects of vocal performance.
