ABSTRACT
When we think about space in science fiction film it is in its most extended sense. The term refers us to the types of utopian and dystopian environments the genre is set in and through which its narrative is framed. Its deployment draws attention to the way social and political relations are made manifest and meaningful through spatial coordinates such as high and low; its usage allows us to think of proximity and distance, near and far, contraction and expansion, stillness and movement and to see these mapped through watery boundaries and spectacular audio-visual fields; and it is locatable and reachable, bio-molecular and atomized-there is inner and outer space. In all these manifestations, endangerment enters the fictive world: space is an envelope through which dark materials merge and converge.
