The role of theory, interpretation and critical thought within qualitative sport and exercise research

There is a perception that qualitative research is not informed by theory. To shed light on the relationships that exist between theory and qualitative research I have organized the discussion in this chapter along four broad questions:

1. What is theory? 2. How is theory used? 3. How can qualitative research be interpreted? and 4. What is critical thought?
