ABSTRACT

EVEN IF YOU ARE JUST A VISITOR, a felony prison is a sobering place. Visiting a loved one there must be close to excruciating. I was preoccu-pied the day I drove to meet Dean Gillispie at the London Correctional Institution. I had been to London, Ohio, many times. As attorney general, I had overseen the operations of the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) located there. BCI is Ohio’s headquarters for criminal forensic investigation, including the laboratories where fingerprints, DNA, and other criminal evidence are analyzed. Now I was returning, not as the state’s attorney, but as a potential pro bono lawyer for a convicted rapist. I wanted to make the most of this visit. I wanted to know unequivocally whether or not I should commit myself to working on behalf of Dean Gillispie.
