ABSTRACT

I I N I van Karamazov a double conflict takes place. The hatred he bears his father and his half-brother Mitya (both of whom he unconsciously helps to ruin) is of a nature that modern psycho-analysis would easily account for. But parallel with this, his spiritual travail reaches a tension verging on madness. In this respect Ivan's 'Grand. Inquisitor' and his nightmare talk with the devil complete each other. Both embody his 'rebellion' and bring to a head the two aspects of Dostoevsky's main theme: the problem of Value on the one hand, and that of inner Freedom on the other.
